Copper Cathode Suppliers: The Largest Exporting Countries
Refined copper cathodes are the standard form of refined copper. They are traded by the tonne against the metal market, and China is by far the largest buyer.
The largest exporters
According to OEC trade data for 2024, world exports of refined copper cathodes were worth about USD 86.8 billion. The Democratic Republic of the Congo supplied 22.1 percent of world trade and Chile 19.8. Japan (7.5), Kazakhstan (4.3), Australia (4.2), China (3.6), Russia (3.5) and Poland (3.0) followed. The Congo and Chile have large mines and smelters, and Japan and Poland refine imported ore and scrap.
The largest buyers
China took 38.2 percent of world imports in 2024. The United States (9.5), Chinese Taipei (5.5), Italy (5.4), Germany (4.3), Turkey (3.6), Thailand (3.5) and India (3.0) were the next largest. Buyers are wire and cable makers, brass mills and traders who store metal against the exchange contracts.
Grades and brands
The top grade is stated by a standard, for example 99.99 percent copper, and many cathodes are sold under a registered brand of a refinery that the metal exchanges accept. A contract names the grade, the standard or the brand, the weight of a bundle and the tolerance. Ask for the producer's analysis certificate and for an independent weighing and sampling at loading.
How copper is priced
The price is linked to the metal market: the contract names the reference price of an exchange, the period of pricing and a premium for the product and the delivery. The premium depends on the region, the brand and the logistic cost. Because the metal price moves daily, both sides agree on the day or the average that sets the price.
How cathodes are shipped
Cathodes are strapped in bundles of about two to three tonnes and shipped in containers or on general cargo ships, and in larger lots as break-bulk cargo. They are valuable, so cargo insurance, the seal numbers and the weight check matter. Under CIF terms the seller buys the insurance; see FOB vs CFR vs CIF.
Documents and checks
Expect the analysis certificate, the weight and sampling report, the certificate of origin, the invoice and the bill of lading; see export and import documents. For metals the buyer should also check the seller and the origin, because of the sanctions rules and the rules on conflict minerals, and pay against documents through a bank.
Sourcing cathodes on Comdity
The copper cathodes page shows the listings. Post your own with the grade or brand, the quantity, the origin and the port, and use offer and counteroffer to agree the premium and the shipment. A lawyer should read a large contract.
