DAP and MAP Fertilizer Suppliers: The Largest Exporting Countries

DAP and MAP are the two main phosphate fertilizers. A few producing countries supply most of the world, and the buyers are large farming economies such as India and Brazil.

The largest DAP exporters

According to OEC trade data for 2024, world exports of DAP were worth about USD 10.5 billion. Morocco supplied 29.3 percent of world trade, China 24.1 and Saudi Arabia 21.5. Russia (7.0), Jordan (3.1), Egypt (2.2), the United States (2.2) and Australia (2.2) followed. The big three together supply about three quarters of the trade.

The largest MAP exporters

World exports of MAP were worth about USD 9.1 billion in 2024. Morocco again led with 33.4 percent, followed by Russia (20.5), the United States (12.5), China (12.0) and Saudi Arabia (9.1). Mexico, Egypt and Bulgaria are small suppliers.

The largest buyers

For DAP, India took 26.7 percent of world imports, Bangladesh 11.6, the United States 7.6, Pakistan 5.6 and Vietnam 4.4. For MAP the biggest importers were Brazil (27.8 percent), Australia (14.3), Canada (13.3), the United States (11.8) and Argentina (4.9). South Asia buys mostly DAP and the large grain and soybean exporters of the Americas and Australia buy mostly MAP.

DAP and MAP: the difference

Both are made from phosphate rock and ammonia. DAP, diammonium phosphate, has about 18 percent nitrogen and 46 percent phosphate (P2O5). MAP, monoammonium phosphate, has about 11 percent nitrogen and 52 percent phosphate. MAP has more phosphate and less nitrogen, and farmers choose between them by crop, soil and price per nutrient. A contract states the grade, the size of the granules, the moisture and the inspection company.

How it is shipped

Most DAP and MAP moves in bulk on Handysize and Supramax ships from fertilizer terminals, in cargoes of 10,000 to 40,000 tonnes, and in 50 kg bags or one-tonne big bags for smaller lots. Supply rules and timing

Some producing countries limit or license fertilizer exports for periods, to keep supply at home, and the rules change. Check them before you agree a shipment month. Buyers also follow their planting seasons: South Asian demand is strong before the main sowing periods, and cargoes for the Americas are shipped ahead of their planting months.
